I am a craftsperson, artist and educator. I create wearable sculptural art with sustainably sourced fibers, textiles, and vintage findings. My multi-disciplinary practice integrates photography, fashion illustration, drawing, painting and printmaking on textiles, and wearable sculpture. In addition to professional experience exhibiting my artwork and winning awards, I have an extensive teaching background in a university setting to undergraduate students, as well as studio-based workshops and classes. When I’m not teaching or making art, I like to travel, read, and explore the local nature trails.
About the Demonstration
I sculpt with remnant textiles: draping and pinning various odd shaped remnants to piece together a wearable art garment. This process involves utilizing remnant textiles (and ribbons, lace, other ephemera) that would otherwise be tossed into landfill or incinerator. All of the textiles are natural fibers such as cotton, silk, linen, hemp, wool. I sculpt, on the dress form, starting from the shoulder (our natural 'hanger') and following the movement of the fabric to piece together the wearable. I allow the fabric to dictate how the sculpting process proceeds.
